Rate invariance and scallop theorem in viscosity gradients

چکیده

Could you have survived Boston's Great Molasses Flood of 1919? Probably not, according to Purcell's Scallop Theorem, swimming in molasses is nearly impossible. The theorem tells us that, at zero Reynolds number, no swimmer who deforms their body a time symmetric fashion able move. In this paper we consider such swimmer, but introduce symmetry breaking by considering an inhomogeneous environment variable viscosity. We prove that the still unable move, showing Theorem stronger than thought.

Generalized Scallop Theorem for Linear Swimmers

In this article, we are interested in studying locomotion strategies for a class of shape-changing bodies swimming in a fluid. This class consists of swimmers subject to a particular linear dynamics, which includes the two most investigated limit models in the literature: swimmers at low and high Reynolds numbers. Our first contribution is to prove that although for these two models the locomot...

A Simple Invariance Theorem

J. W. Lindeberg’s elegant proof of the Central Limit Theorem [15, 16], despite being in the shadow of Fourier analytic methods for a long time, is now well known. It was revived by Trotter [25] and has since been used successfully to derive CLTs in infinite dimensional spaces, where the Fourier analytic methods are not so useful. For more information on this topic, see the survey paper [3] and ...

a study on rate making and required reserves determination in reinsurance market: a simulation

reinsurance is widely recognized as an important instrument in the capital management of an insurance company as well as its risk management tool. this thesis is intended to determine premium rates for different types of reinsurance policies. also, given the fact that the reinsurance coverage of every company depends upon its reserves, so different types of reserves and the method of their calc...

Viscosity and boost invariance at RHIC and LHC

We consider the longitudinal hydrodynamic evolution of the fireball created in a relativistic heavy-ion collision. Nonzero shear viscosity reduces the colling rate of the system and hinders the acceleration of the longitudinal flow. As a consequence, the initial energy density needed to reproduce the experimental data at RHIC energies is significantly reduced. At LHC energies, we expect that sh...

No many-scallop theorem: collective locomotion of reciprocal swimmers.

To achieve propulsion at low Reynolds number, a swimmer must deform in a way that is not invariant under time-reversal symmetry; this result is known as the scallop theorem. However, there is no many-scallop theorem. We demonstrate here that two active particles undergoing reciprocal deformations can swim collectively; moreover, polar particles also experience effective long-range interactions....
